“She’s never going to help us once she finds out the truth,” Jason spoke on his cell phone while walking outside the DiLaurentis house.

“That’s not going to happen,” came the quick and confident reply.

Jason shook his head. “Don’t underestimate them. Spencer, Aria, Emily and Hannah have been up against a lot these past years and they keep rebounding. I’ve seen it for myself.”

He laughed and Jason felt a chill run down his spine. He’d never heard Charles laugh before.

“It’s just me against them now and I’m holding all the cards,” Charles told him. “All you have to do is get Ali in line. Andrew’s working on the Hastings’ since they’ve decided it’s time they take part in the game as well.”

“What do you mean he’s working on the Hastings’?” Jason asked.

He’d just come to the patch in their backyard where the Hastings property line began and the DiLaurentis’s ended. It was dark and a chilly rain had just begun to fall, tickling his face as he looked up as if irritated now by nature.

“Just do you part, Jason. That was the deal, remember?” Charles continued. This time his voice sounded more agitated.

“I’m doing my part!” Jason yelled back.

Then he heard a sound. He turned quickly, looking behind where he’d just come from, only to see nothing, still bushes, and damp grass. There it was again. A clicking sound that seemed louder this time than before. Jason turned in the direction he heard it, calling, “Charles? Are you here?”

There was no response. Not on the phone he was holding, or in front of him where he knew the sound was coming from.

“Charles?” he yelled again. “If you’re out there just stop with these games. I’m on your side!”

“Then you’re on the wrong sibling’s side,” Melissa said stepping from behind a tree, gun in hand and pointing directly at him.
